About Brå
Brå (The Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention) is a government agency under the Ministry of Justice, acting as a centre of knowledge for the criminal justice system. Its mandate is to contribute to the development of knowledge within the justice system and the field of criminal policy, as well as to promote crime prevention efforts and initiatives aimed at countering violent extremism.
Brå’s activities are primarily aimed at the Government, the Swedish Parliament (Riksdag), judicial authorities, and other stakeholders at the national, regional, and local levels whose work has an impact on crime prevention, including efforts to prevent violent extremism. The general public is also one of Brå’s target groups.
Statistics
Brå is responsible for Sweden’s official crime statistics and annually produces a range of statistical reports. The official statistics include both register-based crime statistics and survey-based statistics. The latter encompasses large-scale victim and self-report studies, such as the Swedish Crime Survey and the School Survey on Crime. Brå’s responsibilities also include developing the content and quality of the statistics and adapting them to the needs of various target groups. In addition, Brå’s statistical work provides reliable knowledge through the analysis of specially collected data not included in the official statistics.
Research
Research and development are central to Brå’s knowledge production. The work is conducted in project form using scientific methods and approaches. The majority of Brå’s research is commissioned by the Government. In addition, Brå conducts research on its own initiative. Brå also carries out research projects designed in dialogue with partner organisations, primarily within the justice system, including the police, but also with other authorities involved in crime prevention.
Crime prevention
Brå coordinates, develops, and disseminates reliable knowledge, allocates financial support, and provides qualified methodological support to various crime prevention stakeholders. This work is carried out with a focus on target groups at national, regional, and local levels. The purpose is to enable relevant actors to conduct, support, and develop effective and knowledge-based crime prevention efforts tailored to their circumstances.
Preventive work against violent extremism
The Center for Preventing Violent Extremism (CVE) is tasked with collecting and disseminating reliable knowledge, strengthening coordination, and supporting professionals engaged in preventive work against violent extremism. The work is primarily grounded in criminal policy and is aimed at actors at the national, regional, and local levels. The objective is to strengthen and ensure the long-term development of preventive efforts.
