Child abuse

During 2016, 23,700 cases were reported regarding the assault of children. Out of these, 4,300 were against children aged between 0 and 6. It is difficult to ascertain the real extent of child abuse, since the violence is often not reported to the police when it is committed against small children.

In total, 23,700 child abuse offences were reported in 2016. This amounts to 27 per cent of all reported cases of assault. Out of these, 8,360 (35 %) were against girls and 15,400 (65 %) against boys. All in all, there was a 14 per cent increase in the number of reported assualts of children (aged 0-17) between 2015 and 2016.

Assualt against children aged between 7 and 14 is often reported by schools, which shows in the statistics, as fewer offences are reported during the summer than in the school terms.
